Zion-Building Through Poverty Elimination
Zion has been defined as God’s people being of one heart and one mind, dwelling together in righteousness, and having no poor among them. Since Joseph Smith’s day, Latter-day Saints have made continuous efforts toward this Zion ideal, including not only assisting the poor and needy but going even further to help them eliminate poverty from their lives by becoming self-reliant. In this episode of Church History Matters, we want to trace the fascinating story of our current church system for helping the poor, beginning at its origins, where it was serendipitously born of necessity in the mind of a stake president amidst the Great Depression, to its current multi-pronged offerings, where, th...

Consecration in Nauvoo & Utah

In his July 1838 tithing revelation, the Lord both affirmed the law of consecration and modified the ongoing way in which the saints were expected to consecrate of their money and property. Rather than following the 1831 system outlined in D&C 42 of legally deeding all of their property to the bishop and receiving back from him a legal lease of property known as a stewardship, the Lord asked th...

Why Evidence-Based Faith Matters

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for,” Hebrews 11:1 reads, “the evidence of things not seen.” Hmm. Faith is the evidence of things not seen. Facts don’t interpret themselves. People interpret facts. Thanks for producing another informative episode. I enjoyed hearing the story at the end. As a teen, I thought the practice of fasting once a month and donating the money that would have been spent on food to help the poor could be the way to solve many problems in the world. From a financial perspective, funds are raised on a regular basis. From a psychological perspective, fasting helps an individual have empathy for those who go without. As a young person, I wondered what kind of problems could be solved if everyone in the world did this?

As usual, a church apologist is lying to you, he says we don't know if Joseph Smith hit anybody or killed anybody when he fired his weapon at the people coming up the stairs. John Taylor was there and he said Joseph Smith hit three of the people, two of which later died and one of the other was wounded. So when they're telling a story and lie to you, what do you think about that? And John Taylor statements to this effect are in the history of the church and at the journal of discourses. And don't forget Joseph Smith was arrested for committing a crime when William Law One of his counselors published the nauvoo expositor that exposed his polygamist practices. Joseph Smith ordered the printing, press destroyed and thrown in the street. I'm Law was mad about his polygamy because Joseph Smith tried to put the moves on his wife, Smith had already married 11 women who already had husbands. So it's always a whitewashed history

Why not ask why the mob was angry? It makes it sound like people just woke up and decided to hate Mormons all of a sudden. The Mormons had been in Navoo for years and their neighbors tolerated their religion and even sympathized with them after being run out of Missouri. The mob only wanted Joseph Smith because of how he was currently acting, and marrying multiple women and dismissing state law and installing himself as the highest authority.

This has been on my heart lately. I wasn’t able to finish this video, but in my reading tonight I turned to Acts Ch 4 and found this Acts 4:31-35 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. What a testament to the mighty change the Holy Ghost can have on our hearts.

The thing I’d add to the question about current prophets and social issues (ends around 55:00) I agree that we have to have a relationship with God but we still need to practice religion within the bounds of the current leadership. Before the ban was removed even if well meaning, members couldn’t ordain someone to the priesthood of the church taught that they couldn’t receive the priesthood. We can’t extend our moral compass to official religious practices while we can be kind in our personal interactions with others where we disagree or have different beliefs.
